Yesterday Doug Antkowiak, at Portent Interactive, hosted a webinar – The Possibilities of Pinterest – and we were lucky enough to attend. The webinar covered everything from how to pin, what your description character lengths should be, and the correct way to use hash tags. It was all very insightful information and very actionable for anyone using Pinterest.

Here are the key points we took away from this webinar:

Optimizing your Profile:

-When writing the About section of your profile, it should be about 200 characters long.

-Be sure to include your company's full URL in the Website section of you profile settings.

-Your Pinterest display image should be optimized for 27 x 27 pixels because that is the smallest your image will ever be displayed on Pinterest.

-Do not use Facebook as a login for Pinterest brand pages – this will only work for personal accounts.

-Using Twitter as a login for Pinterest seems to work best for brands.

-Do not choose to hide your Pinterest profi

canadian pharmacy cialis

le from search engines – you want searchers to find your brand's Pinterest page on search engine result pages.

Optmizing your Boards:

-You should always have a descriptive board title that is no more than 65 characters long.

-Your board descriptions should use keywords that help categorize the board and should be about 200 characters long.

-In the board description, using emails or twitter info helps other users connect with you and your brand in other ways, and improves user experience.

Pins:

-Always write descriptions for you pins. These descriptions should be around 200 characters long and should include keywords that help describe what category the pin should show up in.

-Use hash tags only for fresh pins because hash tags lead to Pinterest search results for that word and also help categorize pins.

-Keep in mind, after you add a hash tag to a new pin, you may not see it appear in the Pinterest search results for 4-5 hours.

There was one piece of information that left us a little confused. Doug noted that “Pinterest limits ONE piece of content on category pages every one to three hours.” We weren't sure if that means for every new pin by a single user, only one pin will be placed per category every one to three hours? We'll follow up with Portent and update this post once we know exactly what was meant by that.

Overall, this webinar was great and we're glad we were able to attend! If you missed out, you can find the full slidedeck here.

Pinterest set the tone for socially based image sites over the past 12 months. But just because a website is first, that doesn’t mean it’s perfect.

Over the last few months we’ve become

buy viagra super active online

enamored with The Fancy, a site that looks similar to Pinterest, but seems to operate with direct focus on their goal.

We love a lot of things about Pinterest, but while it’s easy to browse through the site for hours looking at ideas, clothes and memes, it’s never absolutely clear what the goal of Pinterest is aside from getting a ton of people to look at a ton of things and occasionally be inspired by them. There is some E-Commerce aspects to Pinterest, some social media aspects and some photo sharing aspects, but Pinterest seems to only dip its toe into each of those waters. It doesn’t commit one way or another.

And maybe that’s the goal.

Maybe Pinterest just wants to be everything to everyone and keep open all possibilities. If that’s the plan, they are doing a great job. We’ll hardly knock a site we enjoy as much as Pinterest.

But The Fancy is an interesting case. In our interview with The Fancy’s creator, Joe Einhorn we learned that their goal is:

We wanted to make the coolest online shopping experience. 24/7 you see the best products picked by the people with the best taste and make it one click to buy.

And that is really the key here. We are a shopping utility. You see something, you can buy it. You see somewhere, you can visit it. We even have a button now that you can press to have people make something for you. The goal is to get the right stuff in front of the consumer on The Fancy and then when they buy it, get it in their hands quickly.

So the goal of The Fancy is to create a shopping utility that gives users the coolest online shopping experience. When you head to The Fancy you quickly understand what they are going for and how well they have executed on it. The Fancy feels like a pretty cool place to shop.

But neither Pinterest nor The Fancy has it all figured out. Let’s break these two down like a couple of prize fighters getting ready to square off.

Users

The Fancy has 1.5 million monthly users since launching within the last year. Not too bad. Of course it pales in comparison to the 20 million users that traffic Pinterest. Only Twitter and Facebook, established players in the social media world, have more monthly traffic among social networks. But is 1.5 million dedicated users invested in what’s cool and aware of trends and most importantly, willing to spend money, more valuable than 20 million people simply sharing ideas? We have a feeling The Fancy feels just fine about their user base. It kind of makes The Fancy like a club you don’t often hear about, but when you do hear about it, it’s always a rave review.

Still, if Pinterest ever decided to aggressively pursue dollars from its users, 20 million is a pretty sizable group of people. Even if only half decided they liked a new revenue generating model, Pinterest would still be doing pretty good.

E-Commerce Capability

We’ve covered this one already. The Fancy is a no-brainer winner here. Users get a 2% cut of anything that sells through The Fancy that they have posted. The Fancy gets 10% of the revenue for anything that’s sold on the site. People even get a referral bonus for anyone that they get to sign up. The Fancy is committed to E-Commerce in a way that we aren’t sure Pinterest ever intends to be.

Mobile App

To be fair, Pinterest has made some great strides here recently. But The Fancy has a much cleaner mobile app that replicates their site experience almost exactly. We’re encouraged by recent improvements by Pinterest with both their iPad and Android apps though.

Usability

This is where The Fancy’s exclusive sort of framework makes things a bit more difficult. While there’s a benefit in only being able to see one image at a time on a website, it can be frustrating to have to continuously scroll down simply to find something you were looking at earlier and forgot the name of. It does create a more intimate relationship with the product on the screen, but Pinterest literally allows you to look at as many as 15-20 images at once while still making it easy to connect with each of them.

Another drawback in this area for The Fancy comes with the occasional click-through of a product. Perhaps you see a shot glass with the Batman symbol on it you really like and you click-through hoping to purchase it. Well, sometimes it isn’t so simple. We’ve had a number of experiences on The Fancy where we’ve clicked through hoping for one product and getting a completely different one that was tangentially related. We asked Einhorn about that in our interview with him:

The goal is to get every item you see on the site available to buy. Sometimes, we don’t have a seller for that exact item. So we are allowing people to post something relevant of high quality instead. It’s not great and we are trying to make it better.

Content

While there are a few hiccups, as we noted before, overall The Fancy has a very strong batch of content. Einhorn explained to us that since the goal of The Fancy is to be a shopping utility, he wants to ‘keep the catalog clean’, which is why we see fewer repetitive images on The Fancy. Pinterest does a good job of keeping its homepage fairly immaculate, but struggles once you get into the searching. Search for a simple term, like panda, and you’re bound to see the same six or seven images popping up over and over.

That’s the other thing that starkly separates these two: images vs. products. Both sites rely on images, but The Fancy looks to tie each of them back to a product, while Pinterest is fine with having images for the sake of sharing images. Neither is right or wrong, but it’s an interesting divergence that helps clarify what each site is all about.

Affiliate Integration

Affiliates haven’t been received warmly at Pinterest. Amazon tags are stripped out and quite a few loops need to be jumped through for someone to go from posting on Pinterest to cashing in at home. But The Fancy takes care of everything for you. As noted before, everyone that posts on The Fancy is eligible to receive a 2% kickback on every purchase made through their posts on The Fancy. Pinterest has been aggressive in keeping out affiliates, likely to try to weed out potential spamming before it got started, but The Fancy has taken a different approach and looked to control the program rather than avoid others’ versions of it.

Overall, we like Pinterest and we like The Fancy. There’s a place for both of them in your life. Looking to be inspired and browse around? Head to Pinterest. Looking to buy something cool? Head to The Fancy.

Pinterest has opened even more doors for users. Just weeks after removing its invite only procedure it has released a new Android app and iPad app. The Android app, a heavily demanded feature from users, is available now in the Google Play Store. The app should be on the Android app store later this week. The new iPad app also offers some unique features. Double clicking on a product will take you to the brand’s site within the app. You can then view what else this company has pinned.

We’ve seen the amazing growth of Pinterest start to plateau. These new apps and removing the invite feature should draw in new users. Will we see a jump like we did in the last year, gaining 22 million unique users? Probably not but it isn’t out of the realm of possibilities to see Pinterest’s number climb higher still.

We’re bogged down with nail polish pics and rainbow colored cakes left and right. The biggest war to be won on Pinterest may be in health.
re thrilled to announce open registration!” That was the message posted on Pinterest’s official blog page Wednesday as the site announced its new open sign-up policy to the public. Until now, the only way to participate on Pinterest and pin images was through an invitation by an existing member, a policy that continued to draw frustration of some potential users for those who couldn’t join.

Pinterest users have continued to multiply at an incredible rate. Pinterest only launched in March of 2010, and already passed the 20 million user mark earlier this summer. It has become the third largest social network in the U.S. With invitations no longer required, it will be interesting to see just how large the Pinterest community will get.

With Pinterest now offering open door sign-ups to everyone, all new users have to do is visit the site and create a new account using a Facebook Twitter or email account. From that point, as the blog post on Pinterest stated, it’s “Happy pinning to everyone!”

While there certainly is some big news coming out of the Pinterest camp in the last 48 hours, having just opened up the once invite-only social network to the public, the rest of the week’s Pinterest news was dominated by pin board like site that wasn’t Pinterest at all.

The Fancy, another social photo sharing site is reportedly in talks to be purchased by Apple. And why is that a big deal?

Apple has yet to dabble in social media

and … we think The Fancy is pretty cool

Pinterest and The Fancy

It’s easy to see similarities between both social networks. They both allow users to share photos of products or art, and both allow users to acquire followers and build influence. But the differences between the two are easier to uncover.

The design, feel, and ease of use of The Fancy definitely stand out, but the ability to shop within the site is what really sets the two apart. Where Pinterest is an intermediary to purchases (leading you to another site), The Fancy allows you to do it all without leaving the confines of Joseph Einhorn’s creation.

After spending a considerable amount of time on The Fancy we wanted to know a little more about Einhorn’s vision for The Fancy and its inner workings. So when he wasn’t changing the world with Kanye West and talking with Apple execs, Einhorn answered some questions from the Get Pinterested staff.

Get Pinterested Interviews The Fancy’s Joseph Einhorn

Get Pinterested: To start, we were wondering if you could give us a glimpse into where the inspiration for The Fancy came from? What was your thought process in putting it together? Was there problems with other image based social media sites that wanted to fix or rectify?

Joe Einhorn: I love shopping. My favorite stores in the real world are spots like Barney’s and the Apple Store. But even my favorite stores don’t feel the same on the web, mobile, etc. We wanted to make the coolest online shopping experience. 24/7 you see the best products picked by the people with the best taste and make it one click to buy.

And that is really the key here. We are a shopping utility. You see something -you can buy it. You see somewhere-you can visit it. We even have a button now that you can press to have people make something for you. The goal is to get the right stuff in front of the consumer on The Fancy and then when they buy it, get it in their hands quickly.

GP: So since we primarily write about and discuss Pinterest on our site, there are some obvious comparisons to Pinterest and The Fancy. There are however some very unique differences as well. We were wondering if you could tell us if you believe Fancy will see longer term success than Pinterest. And if your answer is yes, why do you believe that’s the case?

JE: Pinterest is already very successful and should experience continued success. But I like our content, our community, our technology, our product, our team etc. more than any other project out right now. But maybe that’s just me. The main case for The Fancy is the shopping aspect. See something and buy it. I am not sure that is the use case for other sites

GP: A couple of us have recently downloaded the iOS app and have loved its simplicity and functionality. In getting the concept for the mobile application together was there anything that you felt your app HAD to have to make it stand out from the rest. Was there anything that you had to leave behind?

JE: Our mobile apps are pretty smooth and refined across the ios, android and windows mobile platforms so I think the polished experience is key. That and the ability to buy now- including internationally has been key. Internationalization in general has been big for us. Letting people interact in their native language is really important.

GP: The image size on Fancy is much larger than other competing sites and has a more classic blog feel to the layout. What drove the decision to make the site heavily scrollable and do you find the larger images to be more impactful?

JE: Keep in mind that we are offering more and more view modes (slideshow mode, etc.) but to answer your question everything you see on our site or in our apps has been driven in response to the feedback we get from users. They tell us what to build and we try to build it that way.

GP: It seems that images make to the browse feed after a certain number of +’s are reached. With other image based sites it is common to see multiple posts of the same image receiving equally large amounts of attention and both images making it into a feed. How does Fancy avoid this level of repetition and does it depend on users to police themselves or are there safeguards in place to avoid a repost or double post?

JE: I’m not sure every image-based site that you are talking about has the same goal as us. We are trying to be a shopping utility and therefore it’s pretty important to have a clean catalog. We are working on a bunch of technical solutions to deal with de-duplication and clustering of items. ie metadata on the pages the user clips from, url, etc. We are also working on image recognition based solutions. This is augmented by the work of our community.

Content contributors that do well on our site get how to post items that will be successful. They check if what they want to post is in the system already, if it’s not they give it a great image, great title, etc.

GP: The Fancy has recently started an affiliate program. Was the original intent of Fancy to provide a retail option for the amazing images people post? How has the affiliate program been growing? How has user purchases been effected since the affiliate program was started?

JE: Yes our goal has always been to be a shopping utility, a social version of Amazon. With regards to the affiliate program, it’s going great. Don’t take my word for it though, go to twitter and search for thefancy.com and look at the volume of affiliate links being shared.

GP: It seems like The Fancy really believes in rewarding customers, as evidenced by the affiliate program and the “dollar for a referral” program. What’s the thought process behind that?

JE: Like everything else we do, our users drove the thought behind this. Some of our top users were reaching out to me and saying that they felt entitled to some compensation since we were profiting off of their marketing efforts.

The theory with social has been that the egosystem is good enough. If users get recognition, a lot of followers, a lot of fancys, etc. they will be happy. 2012 is starting to feel like the egosystem is giving way to the ecosystem. AirBnB let’s you get income out of your home. We want to get you some income out of your taste.

GP: Are you concerned that the high-end aspect of the merchandise is a barrier to some people, possibly a large percentage of people? Or are you comfortable with the market that you’re currently reaching? And do you envision more products of all price ranges, rather than higher end products, will end up being the future of The Fancy

JE: Pretty sure there is something for everyone here. We sell stuff for thousands of dollars and we sell stuff for a few bucks. Our average order is less than $100 at the moment.

GP: As a Fancy user, on occasion, I’ve come across misleading images. The image catches my attention and when I click through to purchase I’m instead shown an item that is vaguely related and often times far more inexpensive than what was shown in the image. (For example http://www.thefancy.com/things/265986971/Hyper-Realistic-Face-Masks-by-REAL-f or a little less obvious http://www.thefancy.com/things/130392788578603563/Cardsharp-2-Credit-Card-Sized-Folding-Knife). Does Fancy have anything in the works to avoid these kinds of posts or are they a marketing strategy that Fancy employs?

JE: Thanks. Here is the situation.. The goal is to get every item you see on the site available to buy. Sometimes, we don’t have a seller for that exact item. So we are allowing people to post something relevant of high quality instead. It’s not great and we are trying to make it better. We are trying to work with as many brands and merchants that we can so we can eradicate this issue. In the meantime, of course if a customer is unhappy with a purchase we always make it right no questions asked.

We want to thank Joe for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk with us. Check out The Fancy and don’t be shocked if you get addicted to it.

The popularity of Pinterest has continued to grow throughout the summer with referral traffic passing Twitter in May and Bing in June. Referrals are based on traffic volume for sites that use Shareaholic publishing tools that help share site content via soical networks. The latest projections show Pinterest overtaking Yahoo in referral traffic by the end of August.

Pinterest referral traffic has slowed some recently, growing by 43.7% from May to June and then dropping to a 15.97% growth period from June to July. However, according to the article by techcrunch, Pinterest is still in a position to surpass Yahoo. At that point, Pinterest would become the fourth largest traffic source in the world.

Although we normally focus on Pinterest specific news, we try to focus on everything that is going on in the entire Pinterest realm. Huge news in that realm today indirectly involves Pinterest as its largest rival, The Fancy, is currently in talks to be bought out by Apple in the near future.

For those of you unaware of The Fancy, it has a Pinterest styled format where users can compile wish lists of things they “fancy”, create image boards and share with others. However, the Fancy has a much more firm e-commerce presence about it for businesses, where Pinterest is generally used more for marketing to build brand awareness. It is this e-commerce feature of The Fancy that is so appealing to Apple, a company that is looking to increase its e-commerce presence in the market.
